Geodesic dome resistance to wind, snow and cold
3 March 2026 · 5 min read
A dome does not present a large flat surface to the wind: the forces are distributed along the triangles of the structure. This geometry explains its performance.
The stated figures
Our domes are designed for:
- Wind resistance of up to 120 km/h
- A snow load of 50 kg/m², i.e. 0.5 kN/m²
- Use at extreme temperatures from −30 °C to +70 °C
The canvas and how it behaves
The canvas is double-sided PVC-coated polyester, 650 g/m² or 850 g/m² in the blackout version, with an intermediate black coating for total light blocking. It is 100% watertight, UV-resistant, tear-proof and self-cleaning.
Its thickness is 3 mm; the weight reaches 850 g/m² on the opaque section and 980 g/m² on the transparent section.
What matters as much as the numbers
Ground fixing and site preparation determine how well the whole structure actually holds up. Three fixing methods exist, detailed on the assembly and installation page.
In heavy-snow areas, plan for regular snow clearing on the vault to stay under the allowable load.
