Geodesic dome regulations in France: what you need to declare

Before buying, you need to know what your plot allows. In France, the dome's floor area is the first criterion that determines which procedure applies.
The 20 m² threshold
Up to 5 m in diameter, i.e. under 20 m² on the ground, a prior declaration of works (DP) with the town hall is mandatory, as the area falls between 5 and 20 m².
A building permit is only required beyond 20 m² of floor area or footprint, unless the dome is an extension attached to an existing house that alters the whole building.
The demountable residence status
Article R 111-51 of the French planning code defines demountable residences as installations without foundations, fitted with indoor or outdoor equipment, that can be self-sufficient with regard to public utility networks, intended for housing and occupied as a main residence for at least eight months a year, and that can be easily and quickly dismantled at any time.
A geodesic dome may fall into this category depending on how it is used.
The rule that takes precedence: your local council
The local urban development plan, protected zones and the rules applicable to campsites and natural camping areas may alter these principles. Always contact your local planning department before placing an order.
